Why this course matters

  • In 2024, there were an estimated 530 reported cases of legionellosis in Great Britain, with the majority being Legionnaires’ disease
  • Legionnaires’ disease is a serious lung infection that can be fatal, particularly in older adults and vulnerable individuals
  • Employers have legal duties under health and safety law to assess, control, and monitor legionella risks

  • Overview

Legionella is a type of bacteria that occurs naturally in water. In most outdoor environments, it rarely causes harm, but it can become a serious health hazard when it enters man-made water systems and conditions allow it to multiply.

This Legionella Awareness course gives learners the knowledge to understand what legionella is, the health risks it presents and the key measures used to prevent and control exposure in workplace water systems. It explains where risks can occur, how legionella spreads and how good system design, monitoring and maintenance help keep people safe.

  • Who should take this course?

    This training is suitable for:

    • Employees working in or around buildings and sites with hot and cold water systems
    • Maintenance personnel, contractors and technicians who may work pipework, tanks, outlets, showers, or cooling systems
    • Supervisors and team leaders responsible for safe site practices and reporting
    • Anyone who needs to understand their role in identifying and reporting legionella risks
  • Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

LO1: Define legionella bacteria and Legionnaires' disease

LO2: Identify where legionella can be found in natural and man-made water systems

LO3: Recognise workplace systems that may present a risk of legionella growth

LO4: Explain the conditions that allow legionella to grow and multiply

LO5: State the temperatures that control or kill legionella bacteria

LO6: Describe how Legionnaires' disease is contracted and who is most at risk

LO7: Recognise the symptoms of Legionnaires' disease and understand when they may appear

LO8: Describe the control measures used to reduce the risk legionella in water systems

LO9: Understand individual responsibilities in preventing and reporting legionella risks in the workplace

  • Course content

This course combines high-impact visuals, clear narration and interactive activities to guide learners through:

    • What legionella is and why risk increases in man-made water systems
    • Common higher-risk systems: hot and cold services, storage tanks, pipework, showers and taps, cooling towers, evaporative condensers, and firefighting systems
    • How legionella grows: the role of temperature, stagnation and contamination, including biofilm
    • How infection happens: inhaling aerosol droplets
    • People most at risk and how to recognise symptoms of Legionnaires' disease
    • Key workplace controls: risk assessment, temperature control, preventing stagnation, cleaning/disinfection, water treatment, monitoring, and maintenance
    • What learners must do: follow procedures, avoid interference, report concerns early, and act responsibly during work that may create spray
  • Assessment & certification

This Legionella Awareness training course ends with a 9-question multiple choice test with a downloadable certificate.

User certificates, training programmes and results are all stored centrally in your LMS and can be accessed at any time to reprint certificates, check pass marks and act as proof of a commitment to ongoing legal compliance.

  • What does my certificate include?
